During the past centuries wood-cutters and charcoal-burners took from here the wood which was used to fuel the evaporation boilers of Volterra’s salt-pans, a leading salt center since the Roman period.
In the Middle Age the local Bishops played the most important role in the area as the Torraccia anciant ruins can .
This is where the roots of natural oasis come from, a beautiful place where you can find fallow-deers, wild boars, foxes, porcupines, turtles and rare plants.
